Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to reconcile the historical reverence for extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in Islamic medicine with the most recent scientific evidence regarding its nutritional, therapeutic, and preventive applications.
Methods: A thorough literature search was conducted across multiple electronic databases, with particular emphasis on studies published between January 2000and June 2025. The inclusion criteria included systematic reviews, cohort studies, and human randomized controlled trials that investigated the impact of EVOO on health outcomes.
Results: The review demonstrated that the consumption of EVOO significantly enhances neuroprotection, reduces inflammation, and aids in glycemic control, as well as improves cardiovascular health. Its bioactive compounds, particularly polyphenols, demonstrated significant health benefits.
Conclusion: EVOO is a functional food that provides significant health benefits, which further solidifies its significance in both traditional Islamic medicine and contemporary dietary practices. In the future, research should concentrate on the elucidation of the mechanisms that underlie its protective effects against chronic diseases.
